Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League Holds Members Show in August

The Swannanoa Valley Fine Arts League’s (SVFAL) 49th annual Juried Members Show, which opened in late July at The Red House Studios and Gallery in Black Mountain, will run through August 28. Well-known artist and teacher Qiang Huang selected the paintings for the show. At a public reception with the artists, 5–7 p.m. on Friday, August 5, the winners of various categories, chosen by Qiang, will be announced.

Qiang was born and raised in China and now lives in Austin, Texas. His interest in art developed at a young age and was strongly influenced by his uncle Hong-En Huang, a professional painter and art educator. Qiang moved to America and 1985 and began a career in optical engineering while remaining active in the local art communities. Since 2004, his paintings have been selected for four of the Oil Painters of America’s National Juried Exhibitions.

“Our membership continues to grow and, as we study and create, we become better and more skilled,” says Susan Lueck, curator of the show. “This is apparent in the quality of the work exhibited. SVFAL has many talented artists!”

SVFAL has a membership of more than 200 artists who work in a variety of two- and three-dimensional mediums, including oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, pencil, pen and ink, photography, sculpture, clay, glass, wood, mixed media, fiber art, and collage.

The Red House Studios and Gallery is located next to the Monte Vista Hotel, 310 W. State Street in Black Mountain. The gallery is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. To learn more, visit svfalarts.org.
