Works by Richard Oversmith in Exhibit at Grand Bohemian Gallery
An exhibit titled “On Holiday” featuring plein air and studio paintings by Richard Oversmith will be on display at Grand Bohemian Gallery, 11 Boston Way in Biltmore Village. There will be an opening reception from 6–8 P.M. on Saturday, June 11, and the exhibit will run through July 31. These paintings reflect scenes from Richard’s home of Western North Carolina as well as his travels around the world.
While studying fine art and illustration at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Richard was invited to study at the Royal College of Art in London, England. It was there he gained experience in plein air painting and deepened his knowledge of oil painting. He graduated from Kendall College in 1995 and returned to North Carolina to begin his career.

Richard says his goal in painting is for the viewer to engage with the subject matter on the canvas. Working most frequently in oil on linen, he strives to create a mood within every painting by utilizing visual stimuli, such as color, edges, and drawing. His works reflect his lifelong study of the works of past masters, as well as those of leading contemporary painters. Most importantly, he lets each scene speak to him, and then he captures that “voice” utilizing only as many brushstrokes as required.
