Summer Happenings at Mica

Dinnerware. Gay Smith, artist

Mica, a fifteen-member cooperative gallery in Bakersville, has a lot to offer this summer. New items and events create an inviting environment in which visitors can connect with the artists and their works to find handmade objects with a human touch not found in manufactured items.

“We have enjoyed every piece purchased from Mica over the years,” say Hal and Kathy Brown, longtime friends and supporters of the gallery. “We feel as if we have taken home a little bit of each artist’s personality and talent.” Items available include whimsical clay sugar and creamer sets and teapots by Jenny Lou Sherburne, elegant candelabras by Gay Smith, hand-dyed scarves by Carmen Grier and cast and slumped glass trays by new members Simona Rosasco and JJ Brown. Custom dinnerware, thoughtfully displayed in place settings, is also offered.

“The dinnerware I make is a labor of love,” says Mica member Jon Ellenbogen. “I feel honored when someone has chosen the work of my hands and heart to grace their table.” In concert with the Summer of Glass events in Asheville and the surrounding area, Mica features the work of glassblower Colin O’Reilly through August 22. O’Reilly, the 2016 overall winner of Garden & Gun’s Seventh Annual Made in the South award, offers whiskey and cocktail sets, snifters and one-of-a-kind pieces at the gallery.

Wine-Down-Fridays also take place at Mica throughout the summer. The pop-up affairs offer visitors an opportunity to enjoy wine, nibbles and lively conversation while exploring the gallery’s offerings. The events are announced on Facebook and Instagram.

Mica is located at 37 Mitchell Ave, Bakersville. Hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1–5 p.m. For more information, visit micagallerync.com or call 828.688.6422. Follow Mica on Facebook at Mica Gallery NC, or on Instagram.
