Creative experiences always provide a much-needed break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Now in its fifth year of providing creative workshops and retreats, Cullowhee Mountain ARTS (CMA) encourages writers and artists from near and far to participate in the five-week-long Summer ARTS Series, June 12 through July 10. Participants will have the opportunity to attend a different workshop each week, Monday through Friday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Each week, they will select from four visual arts and three creative writing workshops. CMA partners with Western Carolina University and utilizes space in WCU’s School of Art and Design. Some workshops are open to students of all levels, while others require prior experience. It is part of CMA’s mission to offer something for everyone. Visual arts media include book arts, ceramics, mixed media, printmaking, painting, and photography. Creative writing options include fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. WCU’s Fine Art Museum has partnered with CMA to curate a summer exhibit from the Museum’s permanent collection that will relate to the summer workshops. On Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m., faculty for the creative writing program will give readings at Sylva’s City Light Bookstore. Additionally, CMA holds retreats for artists and writers. One upcoming retreat is at Lake Logan Episcopal Retreat Center May 9–15, September 11–15, and October 24–29. Registration ($525–850) is only available in advance by visiting cullowheemountainarts.org or by calling 828.342.6913. On-campus accommodations and meal plans are also available.
