October Offerings at Grovewood Gallery

Throughout the month of October, artists and craftspeople will demonstrate their skills at Asheville’s Grovewood Gallery. On Friday, October 5, and Saturday, October 6, metalsmith Audrey Laine Sawyer will kick off American Craft Week at Grovewood. Sawyer, who holds a bachelor’s degree in studio art from Rollins College and is a 2010 graduate of Haywood Community College’s Professional Crafts Program, will demonstrate her process of piercing nature-inspired silhouettes on the face of her hand-fabricated, hollow form jewelry. On the same dates, fiber artist Karen Kennedy will demonstrate needle felting using locally dyed wool to create fall pumpkins and leaves.

The following weekend, October 12 and 13, Shawn Krueger will demonstrate plein air painting techniques in the sculpture garden at Grovewood Gallery from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “I work with many thinned layers and glazes of transparent pigments, so I’m not a plein air painter who will go from zero to finished piece in one sitting,” says Krueger. “But anyone who stumbles across my set-up on the Grovewood grounds will hopefully see a well-thought-out composition as well as an established sense of light and dark values.” On Saturday, October 13, Krueger will be joined by textile artist Kendall White, who will be demonstrating the wet felting process she uses to create sculptural wool baskets and merino wool neck wraps. “Everyone knows what wool is, but not everyone knows how many things you can make with it,” says White. “I love the exchange of information that happens between people who love this craft.”

In addition to the demonstrations throughout October, there will be an opportunity for visitors to peruse the Grovewood Village’s artist studios, which are normally closed to the public. Located next door to the Grovewood Gallery, the studios will be open for free, self-guided tours from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 20.

Grovewood Village is located at 111 Grovewood Road, adjacent to the Omni Grove Park Inn. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is available onsite. To learn more, visit or call 828.253.7651
