Shindig on the Green: An Asheville Summer Tradition

Celebrating its 50th season this year, the always popular Shindig on the Green, a celebration of the music and dance that originated here in the mountains of Western North Carolina, opens with concerts starting around 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 2. The other concerts will be July 9, 16, 23, August 13, 20, 27, and September 3.

As always, this event is free and the public is welcome to bring instruments, lawn chairs, and blankets to Pack Square Park in front of the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Stage. In addition to the performances on the stage, several groups will be playing in jam sessions around the park.

Since Shindig’s inception, hundreds of thousands of folks and their families have gathered to enjoy these concerts. Many even plan their vacations to coincide with Shindig on the Green concerts.

Shindig on the Green is sponsored by Asheville’s Folk Heritage Committee, which will also host the 89th annual edition of the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, the longest running folk festival in the nation. This year, a three-day event featuring old-time musicians, ballad singers, big circle mountain dancers, and cloggers, will be August 4–6 at Diana Wortham Theatre. This is a major fundraiser that enables Shindig on the Green to be a free event.
