Isis Offers Another Month of Amazing Music

This is just a sampling of the variety of musical talent that will be taking the stage at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall this month. For a complete listing of all shows, be sure to check out isisasheville.com.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 6, Mountain Spirit and Isis will present Vincent Cross. A singer-songwriter, Vincent left in June for a summer-long tour that will take him from his home in New York to Australia, then North Carolina, before making several other stops across the country. A native of Ireland, Vincent says his music celebrates the folk song tradition, drawing on old-time mountain music, British ballads, and traditional bluegrass. He says he’s been influenced by the music and sounds of Ralph Stanley and Bob Dylan. Tickets are $10.

At 9 p.m. on Friday, August 12, Swing-inspired musicians Michael Gamble and the Rhythm Serenaders will get people on their feet and dancing. Swing music is happy music, and this group epitomizes its timeless appeal, with the sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Bennie Goodman, and others. Come and enjoy the music of the 1930s and 1940s.

At 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 13, Carsie Blanton will share the stage with The Rondo Rigs. Carsie says she grew up listening to the music of Leonard Cohen and John Prine and by age 11 was captivated by old jazz records. She explains, “I’m interested in what I would call ‘American popular song’—a lineage that runs from ragtime and early jazz all the way up to what’s happening now, like Beyoncé and Bruno Mars.”

The Rondo Rigs is comprised of Eric Robertson (bass, guitar, mandolin), Duncan Wickel (fiddle, cello, guitar), and Nicholas Falk (drums, banjo, bass). Their songs reflect the musical influences the Appalachian Mountains as well as that of the streets of New Orleans. Their concerts can include country music, fiddle tunes, rock ‘n’ roll, and Southern blues and funk. Tickets for the Carsie Blanton/The Rondo Rigs show are $15.

At 7 p.m. on Friday, August 19, Isis, in a show cosponsored by Dream Guitars, presents An Evening with Al Petteway. A Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Al plays nearly every type of music, from popular to folk to classical, and is equally talented on guitar (his primary instrument), lute, string bass, and percussion. He says his compositions are heavily influenced by his long-time love of Celtic music and his own musical roots in folk, rock, and blues. The Washington Post said, “Petteway balances a technical virtuosity with a strong sense of song form.” Al is the coordinator of the Swannanoa Gathering Guitar Week and lives in Weaverville with his wife and music partner, Amy White. Tickets are $15.
