On a quiet corner across from Carrier Park on the west side of town, visitors to Asheville Food Park at 219 Amboy Road can grab a bite and relax. Business partners Justin Schmidt and Dean Pistor purchased the property in 2014. The 1948 building originally housed the Cascade Lounge, a bar that attracted fans from the nearby racetrack, but the property had been vacant since 2004. After extensive renovations, Justin and Dean opened Asheville Food Park last fall with two anchor tenants, Edna’s at the River and Cascade Lounge. “We really hope to be the neighborhood ‘market and hub’ of sorts,” says Justin. “Family friendly, locally owned and operated, and part of the newly described ‘river recreation district.’”
In addition to the fresh eats at Edna’s and drinks at Cascade, Asheville Food Park also boasts a food truck park and regularly scheduled pop-up shops, such as ARTeries by Stina every Friday and mobile spa Be Free Body Massage on Wednesdays and select weekends. Last March, Whisperholler Farms joined as a tenant, and folks can purchase vegetables, plant starts, flowers, and even frozen local meats at its seasonal market. The current number of vendors is now at five, with a couple of spaces still remaining for rent.
The food truck schedule stays updated online, and at least two are available during lunch and dinner shifts, from 11:30 A.M. to 4 P.M. and 4:30–9 P.M. You can take a seat at one of the picnic tables, alongside Mead Creek.
This summer, there are many opportunities for you to experience the Asheville Food Park. On Wednesday, from 5–8 P.M., bring the whole family and an instrument for a bonfire and jam session. Snacks for children will be provided. Other events include outdoor movie nights on the Last Thursday of the month through September, and the Homegrown Concert Series by 98.1 The River on Sundays through August from 2–4 P.M.
