History to Harmonics: Events Support Preservation Society
One of the ways in which The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County (PSABC) helps promote the unique historic resources of our region is by hosting educational and entertaining events in the community.
Charlotte Street in North Asheville is a busy thoroughfare today, but did you know it also has a rich history? On Thursday, September 15, at 5:30 p.m., longtime PSABC members Kim Leatherwood and Kieta Osteen- Cochrane will give a timely presentation, “Riding Down Charlotte Street: Streetcar Suburb to Modern Corridor,” at St. Mary’s Church, 337 Charlotte Street.
“Few people know that the closing of UNC in the Civil War directly affected how Charlotte Street evolved and grew,” says Kieta, education committee chair. “Now, as Charlotte Street may further develop as a modern corridor, preservation can impact how things change.” The lecture begins at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of $10 to support local preservation efforts.
This year, The Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore Village earned the Griffin Award for its excellent restoration of roof tiles. Experience The Cathedral’s amazing acoustics on Sunday, September 25, as Oklahoma-based concert harpist Linda Barton Paul returns for the third annual benefit concert, Harp Strings: A Romance of Music, beginning at 4 p.m.
Renowned for her great range and fusion of forms, such as Celtic, jazz, and classical, Linda will lead audience members in well-loved songs. Noted Asheville preservationist and architect Robert Griffin will deliver an introduction, describing the glorious Cathedral and its sacred harmonics. Twenty percent of Linda’s CD sales will benefit the Cathedral. A wine reception follows in the Parish Hall. Advance tickets ($20) can be purchased online at psabc.org. Any available tickets (cash only) will also be sold at the door.
