The Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) is an unmistakably beautiful bird that gives even the most avid birders pause. The male is adorned with vivid shades of blues, reds, yellows and greens that seem to fuse together, creating subtle and soft pinks, purples and hints of orange.
On a typical, sunny June morning, I visit a grove of macrophylla hydrangeas in my yard as they soak up the gentle light. It is a treat to walk among these handsome shrubs to admire buds and blooms that increase in beauty with each passing day.
On Friday, June 5, from 5–8 p.m., join American Folk Art & Framing (AFA) in welcoming Alabama artist Trés Taylor to the gallery. Refreshments will be available at the meet-and-greet which coincides with the Downtown Arts District’s First Friday.
“One of our guiding principles was to honor the history of BMC while also presenting a season that feels vibrant, contemporary and forward-looking,” says Nicholas Tzavaras, senior director of artistic planning and educational programs at BMC.
Janie Packer learned early how therapeutic art can be, and that lesson shaped her own life and caused her to want to share her discovery with others. “Because my family never lived in one place for very long, I often felt lost, with no comforting community,” she says.
Artist Kevin Andrew will unveil a new body of work during a solo exhibition at Resurrection Studios Collective on Friday, June 5, from 5–9 p.m. The event will feature music by DJ Nex.
The artists of the Wedge Studios 2A are welcoming the natural beauty of springtime as inspiration for their artwork, and the result is an exhibition that is a tribute to one of their own. The show opens Saturday, June 6, from 5–7 p.m. and will run through June 30.
A sketch can be many things, explains nature illustrator Roy King. “It could be a quick doodle on a napkin or a more detailed ink drawing on paper. Sketching is a great way to practice a new subject, troubleshoot an idea or just let go of thinking altogether and let the pencil or pen move where it wants.”
