ASO Announces New Season of Concerts
Asheville Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is planning a full season of exciting concerts and special performances. The 2016–2017 schedule calls for a seven-concert Masterworks Series, a first-time New Year’s Eve celebration, and the return of the popular Asheville Amadeus Festival March 10–19 with famed violinist Midori as headliner and artist-in-residence.
The first Masterworks Series will be at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in the U.S. Cellular Center with ASO’s music director Daniel Meyer conducting. Titled “Tchasing Tchaikovsky,” it is a celebration of the composer’s works, including his Suite from Sleeping Beauty, Francesca da Rimini, and Violin Concerto. Guest violin soloist Jennifer Koh, named 2016 Musician of the Year by Musical America, joins the symphony for the concerto.
Some of the other concerts in the Masterworks Series are George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue; an evening of works by Brahms that are perfect for Halloween; another showcasing music from Walt Disney’s Fantasia; and a season finale concert featuring Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 “Titan.”
Other performances of the new season will include the Asheville Symphony Chorus presenting “From Bach to Bernstein,” and a “Joyous New Year” concert on December 31 featuring Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.
