Crimson Laurel Gallery Opens 2016 Season in New Location
Two artists—Mike Jabbur and Christian Bruun—are joining with Crimson Laurel Gallery to help launch the gallery’s 2016 season. Earlier this year, Crimson Laurel, a studio ceramics retailer, merged business operations with Appalachian Terroir, a housewares company dealing in the home décor, home accessories, and gift markets. There is now a new location, at 621 Micaville Loop in Burnsville, that houses both the Crimson Laurel retail space and Appalachian Terroir’s manufacturing business.
Both Mike and Christian continue the tradition of the elegance and beauty that all our artists’ work share, says Ben Philips, one of the founders of Crimson Laurel Gallery. “We hope both our new and existing customers will be inspired by the simple elegance of this art of our region, the terroir of Appalachia.”
Mike, who is an assistant professor of ceramics at the College of William & Mary in Virginia, creates forms that eclipse their utilitarian functions. Through these everyday vessels, his work explores human interaction and shared experiences. They add new and artistic value to such otherwise mundane activities as coffee breaks, meals, and drinks with friends. A collection of his work is available at Crimson Laurel Gallery.
Christian has earned a reputation in Denmark as one of the finest throwers in the country for the ultrathin white porcelain he creates. His limited edition wood-fired porcelains are hand thrown in Denmark at the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Center. Christian says he makes his large stoneware jars in Vietnam, where he has access to the enormous wood-fired kilns necessary for his work. His pieces are carried by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as the Louvre in Paris.
