Recycled Rustic Refinement at BlackBird Frame & Art

BlackBird Frame & Art hosts Recycled Rustic Refinement: Metalwork by Jesse Lee running through Saturday, December 9.

Two Toned Treasure #1. Jesse Lee, artist

A local craftsman, Lee employs innovative hammering and finishing techniques on metal to create abstract wall sculptures and framed mirrors. “He manipulates antique ceiling tin, copper and other metals into unique statements ranging in mood from organically peaceful to riotously colorful,” says Jean Stryker, owner of BlackBird Frame and Art.

Lee moved to Asheville in 1995, and worked at a recycling shop before becoming a professional picture framer. When he discovered ceiling tin, it became a favorite medium. He often uses it to create quilt-like patterns, and experiments by painting the tiles bright colors to evoke vibrancy and playfulness.

His copper pieces reflect his techniques of hammering and adding verdigris and patina. Depending on how he wields his hammer, his finished work suggests a range of textures: from tree bark to waves.

“I find inspiration everywhere, in the materials I use, in architecture, in other artwork and in nature,” says Lee. “Since 2005, I have been making wall hangings as well as metal-wrapped frames. I’ve recently evolved to create abstract and patchwork pieces—a notable departure for me, coming from an accounting and framing background where things are even, square and balanced. The journey continues to be as satisfying and interesting as the pieces I create.”
