If you have ever been to Burial Beer Company, you have probably enjoyed a beverage in its outdoor space behind the brewery. It has the feel of a forgotten, rustic farm shed with picnic tables and barrels spread out over a graveled yard. Every second Wednesday through October, the folks at Burial will transform this backyard space into the Moonlit Market, a bazaar featuring artwork and crafts. The evening begins as the sun creeps out of sight at 8 p.m. and vendors hang out until 11 p.m.
A perfect balance of festivity and charm, the market showcases the talent and hard work of local artists. Anneliesse Gormley of Spoon and Hook will be there with wares carved from sustainable wood and Jenna Ashcraft of Ashcraft Glass will have delicate, geometric glass art on display. Another long-time fixture of the market, Rachel Prouty of Prouty Book Bindery, features hand-embroidered photo albums and portfolio books. The brewery is also proud to host some of its own employees as artist and vendors, including Kristen Oxtoby of Hauntingly Familiar Vintage, Karli Schwartz of Phat Local and Brit Josa of Torches Ceremonials.
Just by picking up one of its cans, it is clear that Burial Beer Co. places great thought into artistry so it is no surprise that the company has reached out to others in the community to continue to celebrate its artistic identity. Jess Reiser, one of the brewery’s founders, recalls the inspiration of the Moonlit Market, which made its debut in May of 2016. “On Frenchman Street, just outside of the French Quarter in New Orleans, they host a nightly art market from about 10 p.m. to 2 a.m,” she says. “We have a deep connection to New Orleans. Throughout the years, we have drawn inspiration for our brand and company ethos from this magical city. During one of our visits, we stumbled upon this Art Market. It was unseasonably cold with flurries dancing down from the sky and strung lights lighting the area while artists sold their works. It was quirky, colorful and community-oriented— perfect for Asheville.”
Burial Beer Co. is located in the South Slope neighborhood of Asheville. Swing by on Wednesday, July 11, to experience the Moonlit Market for yourself. There will be live music, food available for purchase and, of course, an eclectic selection of Burial Beer.
