The Caldwell Arts Council Hosts Two New Exhibits
By Teryn Worsham
The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir presents two new exhibits on display from August 5 through October 1. “Sculpt Mettle: Redux” celebrates the extraordinary career of influential local artist Dr. Henry G. Michaux. “Thinking Outside the Box” features artwork by Caldwell County art educators that incorporates a box, assemblage elements, encaustic, and other media. An opening reception for both will take place Friday, August 5, from 5–7 p.m.
Dr. Michaux, a native of Morganton, began his 45-year career at Texas Southern University where he studied with noted artists and educators Dr. John Biggers and Professor Carroll Sims. He later earned his doctorate from Pennsylvania State University during an influential period of reform in art education.
“Sculpt Mettle: Redux” will showcase 33 works created by Dr. Michaux from 1977–1997, including mixed-media sculpture, ceramic pottery, drawings, and paintings. The retrospective, organized by the Fine Arts Cultural Enrichment Teaching Studios (FACETS), consists of works in which Michaux combined wood, rope, found and appropriated objects, as well as assorted metals, materials, and mediums. The collected works display Michaux’s technical skill and design knowledge while touching upon several modern and postmodern art movements. FACETS executive director and the exhibition’s curator, Dr. Terry K. Hunter, describes Michaux’s work as “part of a neo-pop/junk/funk/ figurative/non-objective narrative that can fit firmly into a number of artistic generational contexts.”
Caldwell Arts Council Gallery is located at 601 College Avenue SW in Lenoir. Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
