AAAC’s New Refinery is Hosting Exhibits

Opening with a reception from 5–8 p.m. on Friday, July 1, and running through August 6, “Two Roads One Vision” will feature works by Fian Arroyo and Joe D. Burleson. This will be an inaugural exhibit for The Refinery, Asheville Area Arts Council’s (AAAC) new artist, coop, exhibition, office, and event space at 207 Coxe Avenue.

Fian, who lives in Weaverville, is an award-winning illustrator who has helped several Fortune 500 companies with their advertising, toys, and games for more than 20 years. For the exhibit at The Refinery, he has put together a fun collection of fantasy and pop-surrealism art.

Joe, too, is a nationally acclaimed artist. His work has been on more than 250 book covers spanning the genres of sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, romance, and young adult. Joe is based in Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

Also on July 1, there will be a late night installation of works from the MUX exhibition that features artists from the MUX Video Art Festival curated by Shira Service.

MUX Video Art Festival was created by video artists, art theorists, curators, and educators seeking to expand the field for new media and video art. The structure of MUX is derived from the word multiplexing and operates in that fashion, which allows for multiple data streams delivering varied signals to unite over a single channel. The result is a stereoscopic approach to curating new media.

The move to The Refinery coincides with another big change at the organization. Kitty Love, AAAC’s executive director since 2011, is stepping down to assume a consultant role with the group. Kitty has dedicated much of her life to entrepreneurial projects: mural art, retail craft, interior design, tattoo arts, and five years as a downtown gallery owner.

AAAC board chair Gar Ragland says of Kitty, “Her intelligence, vision, and passion for the arts and those who create it in Asheville and Buncombe County have been an inspiration to many of us who have worked with her.”
