“Your life’s work begins when your great joy meets the world’s great hunger.” ~ Kate Bornstein

Getting this month’s issue together, I admit that I got goose bumps. The talent and passion that people in this region possess and express is truly changing lives. And it comes in various forms, many of which intertwine. For some, that means creating art for people to enjoy—whether that be performance-based, written, sculptural, or two-dimensional. See for yourself at events such as Hendersonville Gallery Hop and Shindig on the Green.

For others, their skills bring people together for causes of social justice. Writer Calie Brummer tells us how Ash Devine uses the art of clowning to spread joy in hospitals, nursing homes, and prisons. In our Spotlight On feature, Frances Figart writes of Swannanoabased nonprofit Lan Vwa, which helps students in the Guatemalan city of Joconal and other developing regions access education via cyber classrooms. Another organization called QORDS promotes an environment of self-discovery and social change through a summer camp for queer and trans youth ages 12–17. After talking with volunteers, I can see that these adults are just as moved by this weeklong experience as the campers are.

How do you like to spend your July? If it’s taking a dip in a local lake, planning a cookout with friends, shopping for new threads or furniture at consignment and resale shops, or attending a cultural event, we’ve got you covered. In these pages, you’ll find more than enough events and things to do to keep your days fun. As poet Mary Oliver wrote in The Summer Day, “Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?”
